Cartons everywhere. Miss Doodle has moved. For the 16th time or so. Which is not so much compared to other people, but enough for Miss Doodle. She likes to settle into a new place, looking for new solutions, improvising with space and shape. But it's not easy, all those cartons and the apartment doesn't have much storage place yet. But it is charming. The cats are happy too. There's a round staircase and they love sitting high above looking down. Like lions.

This is part of Miss Doodle's morning rituals. It helps her to not cogitate. In fact, if you think of it, how many times a day do you really NEED to cogitate in order to do something ?

As we know the routine, we don't need to cogitate in order to get out of bed, brush our teeth or make coffee, we just do it. Then our mind thinks: oh cool, she/he doesn't need me here so I'll take the opportunity and fly off to cogitate about serious and important things like unsolved solutions (problems:).

That's when we start to get tense, isn't it. Cause we split in two and then it happens that we make very bad coffee or drop the pot, and at the end the solution remains unsolved.

So we have to shut up our brains in order to do those things, which do not need thinking but which need our entire focus anyway....Yoga, Tai Chi, Gym are nice tools to shut up the brain.

Oh well, just Friday thoughts, Miss Doodle loves you all.

Miss Doodle is back and dancing in the rain with her secretary. She read a book during her vacation, about a (fable says the church:) woman who reigned as Pope in 850 AD (approx). While reading, she doodles these two guys into her notebook.

She didn't get the words right, the correct words are: QUICUMQUE VULT.... which is part of a catholic doctrine (about 320 AD) which said that you will NOT be saved if you do not follow the catholic religion. I'm banalizing, of course. Just so you know that we're back here, too:)

Miss Doodle's Secretary is adjusting to this new, relatively white paper she uses, and it's rough quality, (compared with the very smooth and yellowish paper of the Moleskine notebooks she used before). The colors show up nicely, it's the white background which feels 'wrong" at the beginning.

While portraying Miss Doodle and this round tourist Lady, the secretary thought of a silly song she heard as a child (in 1961, she was 4:), sung by an American singer who was quite famous in Germany at that time, Bill Ramsey. I wonder if he ever had any success in the US but in Germany he really was very very popular. It went like that: "Das ist die Zuckerpuppe aus der Bauchtanztruppe von der ganz Marokko spricht..." which means: "That's the sweetie of the belly-dance company everybody in Marokko is talking about"....

You don't know if you should cry or laugh, if you hear this...If you'd like to get a glimpse into the state of lobotomized mind Germany found itself in during the 60ies, you can find the song on youtube.....:)

Le voyage de Miss Doodle à Fulda en Allemagne -Miss Doodle's Journey to Fulda, Germany

Have been busy finishing a Miss Doodle painting which will hopefully enter a show in a Museum in Fulda, Germany, beginning of next month. The painting was finished on Tuesday evening, at the last possible minute, and I forgot to take a picture! I hope to get one from the friendly curator who is a good friend of mine. Miss Doodle will have to appear in front of a jury TODAY and I hope she will show herself from her best side:).

The painting is a sort of "carnet de voyage", a Travel-Journal, 75 x 50cm / 30 x 20 in., many different scenes with views of interesting places in this town and little commentaries, Miss Doodle Style...

I hope that I'll be soon able to get a picture and show it to you. A big hug for everybody!

Alors. Voilà ce qui s'est passé ces derniers temps. J'ai dessiné pour une expo en Allemagne, à Fulda, sur le sujet "relations" dans le cadre de "la semaine de la femme". Le dessin a été fini en dernière minute (arrrg pourquoi c'est comme ça je n'en sais rien mais les meilleures idées viennent souvent à la fin). Donc. Le dessin a été envoyé en dernière minute, le coin en bas à droite seché avec le sèche-cheveux:)
C'est un carnet de voyage, une aquarelle 50x 75 cm sur papier Arche, avec pleins de scénettes et de commentaires très Miss Doodle-èsques, avec entre autre un défilé de mode très baroque!!!

Et voilà que j'ai oublié d'en faire une photo, mince alors. C'est antiprofessionnel ça, comme attitude. J'espère que j'aurais quand même l'occasion de vous le montrer bientôt.

En attendant, espérons que le jury, qui se retrouve aujourd'hui pour sélectionner les 70 oeuvres qui vont participer à l'expo, dans un musée, aime Miss Doodle comme vous l'aimer:)

They get bigger and bigger and gobble up all space until you end up squashed.

La secrétaire de Miss Doodle travaille sur deux peintures très différentes en vue d'une exposition en Allemagne au mois de mars. Miss Doodle vous présente une "sneak preview":
Miss Doodle en visite à l'Abbaye Bénédictine St. Marie à Fulda en Allemagne.

St. Mary's Abbey is a Benedictine nunnery in Fulda, Hesse, Germany.
It was founded in 1626. Its first decades were very troubled as a result of the Thirty Years' War: the sisters often had to flee from enemy troops and the abbey was looted several times.
The nunnery was able to evade destruction during the secularisation of 1802 by turning itself into a girls' school. During the Kulturkampf, the sisters went into exile in France from 1875 to 1887. In 1898, the nunnery was elevated to the status of abbey. In 1942, although most religious houses in Germany were commandeered by the National Socialists, the nuns were able to avoid eviction by offering the use of most of the premises to the Wehrmacht.
After becoming closer in their way of life over a period of many years to the Beuronese Congregation within the Benedictine Confederation, the abbey finally became a member in 1982.
The nuns engage in various handicrafts, run the abbey shop and have built a compost activator.

L'abbaye bénédictine de Fulda fut fondée pour la mission dans le Nord de la Germanie. Elle prit son essor après 754 lorsqu'elle devint, en étant le lieu de la sépulture de St Boniface, une sorte de sanctuaire national pour les Germains. Une grande basilique fut construite, entre 791 et 819, sur le modèle de St-Pierre de Rome dont l'influence était grande à Fulda.
L'école de Fulda commença de devenir florissante sous Charlemagne et Alcuin et elle fut développée par Raban Maure. Connue alors dans toute l'Europe, elle apporta au monde germanique les oeuvres de l'Antiquité et les commentaires des Ecritures.

This morning, the secretary opened the 5th little door of her advent-calendar, and found this behind it:

“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow and of grief from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.”

She has been thinking about this the whole day. It seems very desirable to do as the saying says, but how?

It seems, too, that Miss Doodle is one of those persons, who naturally does what the saying suggests. So, this came to the secretary's mind, it's for Suki.

Artist Mike introduced the secretary to Ms. Esmeralda and Ms. Ermintrude and the secretary told Miss Doodle about them. So Miss Doodle invited the two "Mses" to a Paris sightseeing tour and while they were heading to the Eiffeltower, the secretary took a picture!

In the morning the sheep and Miss Doodle had been to the coiffeur (that is why Esmeralda and Ermintrude may look a bit like giant poodles) and here they are, all dressed up, looking glamorous.

Miss Doodle is very busy helping her secretary to make a list of all the pieces which will go into the exhibition in November. Watercolour paintings, textile works, acrylic paintings both on canvas and on paper , prints, all in all 61 pieces. Some are already in Germany, and some are still in Paris.

At the same time the secretary (driving her husband crazy with this last-minute-inspirational-artwork:) puts the final stitches (or almost final:) to the three textile pieces which will go into a collective exhibition here in Paris...

September 16th, 2008 - Preparing for the "FULL METAL JACKET" mode

Soon tough times will begin. From late September until February/March, Paris is on a race. With it's peak just before Christmas. The metro is overcrowded, and so are the streets and the shops and the museums, life is speed.

In view of this franctic period, Miss Doodle asked her secretary to design her a protective outfit, comfortable, capable to ward off fiercest attacks and still looking stylish....

Miss Doodle took her cat, when she went on holiday.The cat, a pure city cat, ventured on a tree. You understand that he neverlearned how to do that.

But there he was, going higher and higher on a branch,until the branch was too slim. And too high up so that Miss Doodle couldn't touch the cat.

The cat slipped and turned and hang there like a ripe pear!

Then he fell, Miss Doodle gasped and tried to catch him and...

When it was clear that no harm was done, Miss Doodle laughed her head off......
The cat went inside, sulking, for a nap on the bed.

Juli 15th, 2008 - STREET STILL LIFE: The abandoned watermelon, orange and banana with pigeon

NB: The secretary used a black ink pen here, watersoluble, which gives the whole painting a touch of "rainy day"... it isn't a rainy day, but a very sunny one. And this watermelon on the sidewalk: the passers-by do not allow themselves to look at it and to ponder it, except the pigeon and two little girls, walking hand in hand, yelling: Iiiiihhh (meaning something like YIKES), although this watermelon still does look beautiful, juicy and not damaged (yet). So, what is upseeting them (and Miss Doodle) ? It must be the soaked tissue paper, waste chewing gum and aluminium foil strips etc...lying there too, the whole image is one of waste.

Paris is a big city. Big cities use to host madmen and madwomen.

Our madman sits in the metro car, with three empty seats around him, and when the secretary tries to sit down, he yells most agressive things and she quickly backs away, angry and shocked and upset. Very upset. You cannot yell back at these people because you have to be cautious
around them. So you stay with your anger. You either let it eat up your stomach or you forget about it. Get it out of your head.

In order to do so, the secretary turns to her sketchbook. But she doesn't dare to sketch this man right there cause he goes on ranting and yelling, trying to catch people's eyes to mob them. Okay, so she does it at home. The interesting thing is, that the man turns out much older than the model.

The secretary sketches an angry Miss Doodle too. Talk about action and reaction.

Today we let you have a look into the sketchbook. This is Miss Doodle's secretary trying to sketch herself in a highly sceptical mood, together with some Doodle Soup Cans and Miss Doodle taking three hurdles (upper left corner). As the expression on the secretary's face shows, she is not happy with the selfportraits, she finds that she is not so angular, and she finds that these sketches are too flattering. Well, we don't give a dime, cause this is about drawing essentials:)

Miss Doodle and her secretary are very happy today and honoured to share the following with you:

You remember Miss Doodle's trip as a photographic journalist to New York? This is a wonderful day and a great day for Miss Doodle. She has her first publication in the international trimestrial Photomagazin Phot'Art! - N)10, which is all about NEW YORK and it's artists.

The Magazine is bilingual (English/French), the paper and such the rendition of the photos are exceptional and the articles about the photographers and their art very interesting.

The cover photo is by Lynn Bianchi, inside there are more fascinating photos of this NY artist, as well as many others, you can see the summery on the page hereunder. Note from the secretary: this post speaks of what has become of some of the ideas we had during the 70ies. The french context: you are supposed to buy expensive clothes and highheeled shoes, you have to like to work like a dog and care for the entire family lovingly, you must buy magazins showing you what the ideal women and her outfit should be, while those who are the LAW are gathering in their soupkitchens, brewing court-decisions against a girl who assured her future husband that she was a virgin although she wasn't, and now the marriage has been cancelled by a judge, so to speak.

The Chinese Fountain

Miss Doodle is sitting in the waiting room of a chinese massage parlor. She is waiting for the masseuse and has time to study the decoration. There is an enourmous happy golden Buddha (plastic?), a mini audio equipment and a tiny chinese fountain. It is made of ceramics, more likely of plastic too, it doesn't function and it is very kitschy. At the same time it is beautiful and soothing.

Watch out, if you are not used to french markets, this is what you see at the butcher's stand:)

Sauerkraut with spareribs, Frankfurter and Strasburger sausages, rabbits with their heads on, Capons and chicken with their heads and some feathers on, Quails with no head, steaks and very bloody livers of beef, porc to roast....and a mostly beefy butcher.

Miss Doodle goes to a big Parisian department store to buy a tablecloth, although

she doesn't really belong to the tablecloth-people but ok, forget about the tablecloth, there she is , suddenly getting lost in the jungle of the perfume department. She ends up treating herself to a blueblack nail enamel and a red, very red lipstick from DIOR. Very fancy:)

Then the saleswomen with an enormous CD (Christian Dior) pendant (which we forgot to paint)hanging from her neck, asks Miss Doodle: "May I perfume you" ???

Miss Doodle says YES (she will eventually come to regret this yes). She wants to underline that a tiny bit of perfume would meet all requirements, alas, she isn't as quick as the saleswomen:

For the rest of the afternoon she walks around as if someone had pulled her head into a giant bottle of MIDNIGHT POISON....

Miss Doodle is wondering about the fashion, these days, at least here in Paris, the fancy handbags get bigger and bigger. Is this because we really need more ample bags to take more things with us? Or do we have to adapt and think about what on earth we can put into those bags to fill them? Cause they wouldn't look good with just a sketchbook, the keys and purse, would they?

Miss Doodle denkt nach über die Mode: Die Handtaschen werden immer grösser, hier in Paris zumindest. Brauchen wir wirklich grössere Handtaschen um immer mehr Kram mit uns herumzuschleppen? GROUP PORTRAIT

The young blond woman seemed totally absorbed. Earphones plugged in, eyes closed, did she listen to music or to a fascinating story, or to her lover's voice? Miss Doodle likes to observe without knowing.

The girl in red seemed pleased with the book she was reading, there was this beautiful little amused smile on her lips which created a dimple in her right cheek.

The guy with the glasses and the checkered shirt stared out of the car-windows. Or perhaps at his own reflection in the window wondering what has happened to his hair, when did it turn grey? Where has time gone.
Two minutes in the métro, enough to make an approximate portrait.

The man in the pink shirt with the white hair seemed to concentrate very much on some issue in his head or heart. Or on nothing. He posed like that for a long time, including at least 4 or 5 Métro-stops.

Suddenly, while we were walking across the fields, he picked this blooming dandelion up and blew it. I told him to do it once more for the camera, grumpily he obliged:) - that's my husband.

Here you can see better the two wooden african sculptures, plus Dad and the Giraffe.

I like this portrait of my mom and brother. My Mother usually never smiles on pictures because she hates being photographed. So I have to be patient and ambush her:)

These three are nice together...

This is my brother and me, at my parent's house. I look a bit fat, I think the window does that:)

THE HOUSE WITH THE FISH POND

My Dad was sleeping here, and I had a wonderful quiet moment to sketch him.

This is my brother's and my sister in law's house. My brother bought this place which was a barn with a pigpen.
He bought the necessary equipment from a carpenter who had shut down his shop plus an old tractor. Then he completely emptied the barn and , with the help of my dad and other qualified people, made a lovely home out of it.

You can see, it has a workshop attached, and a porch on the right side which is attached to the back of the neighbour's house. In front of the porch is the fish pond.

The gutters of the porchroof end in a dragon's mouth, you can see that on my painting, so when the rain is falling, the dragon is spitting water into the pond and the fishes are happy.

The fish pond: fat gold fishes and little grey one's, I don't know their names.

This is a view from the upper part of the place.

The family is sitting there in the shade, my mom Marianne, my brother Volker and his wife LovelyN, and my Dad Joachim. My mom is very amused and the picture makes her look as if she wear a strange headdress...The girafe in the background is made of fabric and was a gift from my brother's students. My sweet sister in law Lovelyn is from Africa, and in the house and around it there is a lot of African art.

I hope you all enjoy these pictures, I do, while I'm waiting to get my other blog back and enjoy

Here are the portraits, Miss Doodle has done yesterday in the Métro.
Her secretary has accepted to colour them....:)

The young man with his smart cap (army surplus?), (his ear was interesting to draw, says Miss Doodle who finds ears challenging!)

A sorrowful looking lady, a gentleman who seemed to dream of his next holidays and a young handsome fellow reading a book (Miss Doodle couldn't make out the title, to her regret).

A young blond schoolgirl deeply in conversation with her friend, she moved a lot so that this is a bit of a basic sketch.

This woman looked content, almost smiling while leaning her head against the carriage and closing her eyes. Miss Doodle loves to draw sleeping faces. She feels less intruding.

Now this lady and her little boy sat in front of Miss Doodle until the little guy moved away to another seat and she gracefully showed her profile, she looked like a queen. Afterwards she looked at the portrait and smiled and said: "you should have told me so, I would have posed better"! Very sweet...

You see all kinds of people in the metro of many different nationalities and ethnical origin.

The beautiful man with the fascinating turban looked absorbed by a book, too, and it was a real pleasure to portrait him, says Miss Doodle, with quick strokes. His beard was rather blond and we bet that many of those who saw him would have loved to know, what his appearance stands for...

May 20, 2008 - Miss Doodle's secretary

Hey are there Pixies in this galaxy? Some minutes ago we taped like wild,

leaving a text for this picture, and now it's all gone.

Well. Here we go again.

Miss Doodle's secretary declines work. All she wants is finish this novel and drink this beer while Miss Doodle is busy on the metro portraying people. The sun is shining, people look

Rapunzel Rapunzel, let down your hair

Miss Doodle has spent some time at a lovely place. Do you know the Grimm brothers' fairytale "Rapunzel"?

If you don't, you can read it here

This is the "tower" Otto Ubbelohde, the painter who illustrated the Grimm's fairy tales, used for his illustration of the Rapunzel tale. It is located in the "Marburger Land" in Hessen, Germany.
